Nottingham is set to be transformed, with recently released plans revealing it could be the “most significant city centre development sites in the UK”.

The council established an independent Greater Broad Marsh Advisory Group, made up of local and national advisors, to propose ideas on how to redevelop the derelict Broadmarsh shopping centre.

Together with British designer Thomas Heatherwick and socially responsible development company Stories, they released their new Vision that would see more than 750 new homes and over 400,000 square feet of high-end business and office space being built.

Mr Heatherwick commented on the development, which is predicted to cost £500 million, saying: “Rather than demolish the structure, we are proposing to keep the frame and breathe new life into it, creating a place that can hold the diversity and vibrancy that is so lacking from many city centres.”

The Vision sets out intentions to reinstate some of Nottingham’s lost street connections to re-link the whole of the centre; create a wildlife-rich green space the public can enjoy; built new commercial and mixed-use buildings, including conference space and retail units; and transform the existing Severns House into a hotel so tourists can sleep on top of the city’s unique cave system.

Broadmarsh shopping centre was handed back to the local authority in July 2020, after former owners intu went into administration. Last June, demolition work on the site began to prepare for the impressive redevelopment. It is thought just the demolition phase could last until spring 2022.
