The Covid-19 has changed many aspects of the world in recent months, and not all of this change has been negative.

As an article for NBC recently noted, one of the positives to the dramatic shift in our lives has been a surge in organisations looking at how they can make their offices more sustainable and pleasant places to work when we are allowed to go back to our desks.

Joseph Allen, director of the healthy buildings program at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in the US, told the news provider that he believes people will “look at office buildings differently” when there is a broader return to work.

“The plexiglass will go away, but the attention to air quality, water quality, lighting and acoustics will stay,” he predicted.

There has long been a strong argument for including more natural light in office spaces, which means gone are the days of small windows, which are being replaced by much larger, and often structural, glazing.

One trend that has been growing in recent years, and that’s gathered pace in 2020 particularly, is biophilic design, which involves bringing the benefits of the outdoors inside to create better working environments.

Speaking to This Week in FM earlier this month, Dulux trade commercial colour consultant Lisa J Piley said that demonstrating that employee wellbeing is a top priority will be essential in the coming months if businesses are to encourage their workers back to their offices.

Biophilic design is a big part of this, which includes ensuring that the office space you work from makes the most of the natural light that’s available to create a more soothing and appealing work environment.
