The Biggest Retail Design Trends For 2021

Both retail and hospitality properties have had to make accommodations and adjustments to adhere to the ongoing guidelines for the COVID-19 pandemic, and will likely have changed how they will function in the future.

Retailers will also have to adapt to a change in buying habits as more people spend online. We have a look at some predictions for what key design trends will be popular for retail businesses in 2021 and beyond.

1. Welcoming spaces

This trend has already been seen in cafes, hotels, and restaurants, but it is set to become part of the shopping experience in retail properties. Extra seating to allow customers to get comfortable and indulge in the shopping experience will be preferred over cramming racks of clothing into the store. Expect to see more vibrant colours and interactive screens for ordering and advertising.

2. Experiences over sales

With so many Brits turning to online shopping, the physical brick-and-mortar store will cease to be the final destination for the shopping journey. Instead, the physical space will be where customers will come to test out products before making their purchase decision online.

3. Changing rooms

Shops have not been able to offer any changing room facilities to consumers during the pandemic, but once this feature returns, expect to see existing changing rooms remodelled to incorporate more space larger cubicles and one-way systems.

4. Virtual assistants

Online shoppers will have likely experienced chatbots and virtual assistants to help with queries, but as we head back to the high street in 2021, virtual assistants may be seen more in physical stores too.
