Shoppers Hit The High Street Over Jubilee Weekend
The four-day Jubilee weekend gave Brits a chance to enjoy a BBQ with family, take a rest from work, and for many people, hit the shops, with recent figures showing footfall increased by nearly seven per cent.
Whether people took to the shops to celebrate the Queen’s 70 years on the throne or because they had extra days off work, the British Retail Consortium (BRC) revealed total UK footfall rose by 6.9 per cent between June 2nd and 5th compared with May 2022’s average figures.
Additionally, total UK footfall for the whole week rose by 17.1 per cent, soaring by 45.6 per cent on Thursday alone.
Chief executive of the BRC Helen Dickinson said: “The public took to the streets for the Jubilee celebrations.”
“More people hit the shops, with many on the hunt for Jubilee decorations, garden accessories and new outfits,” she went on to say, adding it was a “welcome boost for retail businesses reliant on store performance, particularly on the high street”.
Andy Sumpter, retail consultant at EMEA for Sensormatic Solutions, said retailers were able to enjoy a ‘Jubilee Jump’ in footfall, predominantly as a result of buying items to celebrate the bank holiday, for street parties, or to socialise with friends or family.
This news will certainly be welcomed by retailers, after the BRC revealed statistics for May 2022 showing total UK footfall had declined by 12.5 per cent in May, with a drop of 13.6 per cent on the high street.
