The majority of consumers are satisfied with the safety measures implemented in pubs, bars and restaurants since the easing of the lockdown for hospitality venues, the industry has insisted, as the new three-tier restrictions come into force.

Liverpool has been told it will be placed in a tier-three lockdown, which involves pubs, bars, gyms, and casinos being forced to close, but restaurants will be allowed to stay open. Not far away, Manchester avoided the toughest restrictions, being placed in tier two.

A survey of over 200,000 customers, by UK Hospitality and research consultancy CGA, found that 86 per cent were satisfied with the precautions put in place, which include table service only, ordering via a smartphone app, and installing partitions to protect customers.

88 per cent were pleased with how well staff have followed hygiene practices in UK pub and restaurants.

A total of 92 per cent of visitors across nearly 1,200 venues stated that the safety measures had been clear, and 88 per cent thought it was easy to provide track and trace details.

However, satisfaction with hygiene at hospitality venues dipped from 77 per cent at the beginning of September to 71 per cent at the end of the month. Survey respondent said safety remains a top priority as coronavirus cases have continued to rise, according to the research.

CGA research and insight director Charlie Mitchell said that venues have been under immense pressure to deliver and communicate safety precautions and that the survey results show that customers are appreciative of the hard work done to protect them.

“With confidence so fragile and more strict restrictions on trading emerging, all businesses will have to double down on efforts to reassure guests that they are safe and well-supervised places to visit,” he said.
